History

The roots of poker are often debated but most game historians claim that it is a combination of the elements of several games which influenced the game of poker known today. Most probably, the name ‘poker’ comes from a French game called Poque popular in the 18th century, though there are opinions that the name derives from the German betting game Pochspiel, popular with its bluffing element. Besides these two explanations, the name of the game is also connected to the term hocus-pocus used by magicians and the slang word poke used by pickpockets. The first descriptions of the poker game are ascribed to Joseph Cromwell, an English actor who in 1829, described a card game popular in New Orleans; and later to Jonathan Green, a writer who referred to the game in his book called An’ Exposure of the Arts and Miseries of Gambling’ published in 1843.
