A Good Tradesman Never Blames His Tools
I learnt (or re-learnt) a valuable lesson while recording the last Forward Podcast and I thought it was well worth sharing.
If you’re relying on some technology or equipment, make sure you know how to use it and always, always test it. I fell foul of this rule when recording the last Forward Podcast, and it almost spelt disaster.
I prepared well for the interview – I knew my topic, had run an outline past Keith Jackson, we recorded in a suitable location (relaxed environment, no background noise) and we had a good chat beforehand so we both knew what was required in the interview.
However, unbeknownst to me, someone who’d used the microphone before me had buggered around with it. The recorder now thought it was recording through line-in, instead of via the microphone… and I didn’t know what the recorder was thinking.
