A Public Podcast Education

Joseph Campbell said that a journalist has ‘an obligation to educate himself in public’. This fits well for a young PR blogger, and will be my mission as I take the reigns of the Forward Podcast.

I’m a newbie when it comes to podcast production, and I’m going to try to educate myself in public - for the benefit of the Forward community.

While I’ve been listening to a range of podcasts for a while, until recently I hadn’t tried to produce one. I’m innately curious though, and I’m keen to have a go at it - and hopefully educate my peers along the way.

I don’t know anyone in the ‘real’ world who is into this stuff (as readers of my blog will have seen me lament), so for my tutorship I’m turning to the great minds amongst the PR blogosphere.

The first step in my education inolves listening to a number of podcasts and reading the blogs of podcast producers.

The key PR podcasts I’m drawing on here will be:

I’d encourage any young PR interested in learning about podcasting to subscribe to all of the podcasts above, and the blogs of their producers.

I’ve also recently come across a great blog from Donna Papacosta. She’s an experienced podcaster, and she often features some great ‘how-to’ info about podcasting.

Finally, Leesa Barnes at Podonomics has just started a ‘31 days to producing a better podcast’ series (with perfect timing for me, cheers Leesa!). I’ve found this series to be a really useful resource so far, as she’s done the leg work of digging up a bunch of solid beginner’s articles on the topic.

I’m now going to be spending a lot of my spare time trying to master this podcasting caper, and I’d love some input from Forward readers pointing me towards further resources. I’ll be reporting back from time to time with my progress - until then be sure to let me know if there’s any stuff out there that will help me learn!

Update: I’ve added in a picture of me recording the intro to the next edition of the Forward Podcast, at my local beach - Surfers Paradise, Australia. You’ve gotta love the ease of podcast production!
