Don’t Be a PR Spammer

spam.jpgPersonally, I think this goes without saying, but I’ve noticed recently that there seems to be an extremely high level of poorly distributed press releases taking up space in my inbox.

A bit of background: I work as the Public Relations Manager for a firm that happens to do a fairly successful radio show on the local airwaves on Saturday mornings. Given that someone has to be listed as the producer for the show on media research engines, that responsibility fell on yours truly.

Here’s the problem: I receive press releases and phone calls from PR firm reps that are pitching their clients as potential guests for our show. This by itself is not a problem. The problem is that they are pitching people that have topics that have absolutely nothing to do with our show topic.

I’m apprehensive to give a specific example, so I’ll stick to the old adage of “if you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say anything at all.” But think dieting book authors pitched for a real estate radio show…
