Dressing for Successing

I despise fashion. Yes, I hate it. I’m most at home in a rugby jersey and a pair of thongs (that’s flip-flops for our US readers).

But I’m forced to grudgingly accept that being aware of fashion is important for a young professional.

I’ve read in various articles that it’s important to dress up for work; to dress for the job you want, not the job you’re in. This is probably good advice for young PR’s, because it’s important that we appear mature and professional. Dressing ‘up’ a little can help you give an impression of maturity.

However, you should always dress appropriately for the norms of your industry and occupation.

I’m in sports PR, and if I was strutting around pit lane in a tie and jacket people would think I was a dead-set tosser.

Here’s a tip for students – when you’re going on work experience, make sure you ask what you should wear before you get there. It’s a nervous experience at the best of times, don’t make it harder on yourself by dressing inappropriately.

I remember rocking up to my first ever day of work experience, it was at a large event in Australia. I dressed up nicely - black trousers, leather shoes, a flash long-sleeved polo shirt. And everybody I was working with was wearing jeans, comfortable shoes and short-sleeved shirts. Bugger!

Have any Forward readers got some fashion input for a young PR professional? I know I for one could really use the assistance!
