The Dreaded Salary Negotiation
Salary negotiation is always a tricky subject when it comes to job hunting. When is the right time to bring up salary? What kind of salary should you tell them you are expecting? What if they offer below what you want? Is is rude to turn down a salary offer in an effort to negotiate? I answered several of these questions in my last post, “What Type of Salary Are You Expecting,” but I wanted to go a bit further into the actual salary negotiation.
I will be very staightforward with you…I do not like salary negotiations, both from the perspective of the job seeker and the recruiter. I could sit here all day and tell you my opinions on the subject, but I myself get intimidated when it comes to salary negotiation. As the job seeker, I have always felt that if I haggled with the company over salary, they would just forget it and hire someone else. In my recruiting experience, I do not like salary negotiation because I am always fearful that I am going to lose that good recruit simply because their salary expectations are beyond what I am authorized to offer. Salary negotiation seems to be a landmine.
