United 93….too soon?

United93.jpgWe all can remember where we were on Sept. 11, 2001. We can recall how we heard about the terrorist attacks on the U.S. We can probably say exactly how we felt that day. These are images and memories that we will not forget, even if we tried. Universal Studio’s United 93 is supposed to recount those feelings in a “different” way.

The release date for the movie is April 28. Only one week away. I knew that there was talk about doing a 9/11 movie, but I did not follow the developments because there was not much talk about it. I believe the movie was not publicized a great deal because it would bring so many different emotions and memories that Americans have tried to forget. It was created sort of incognito and now being placed into the media at a very opportune time.

According to an article in the USA Today, Universal production chief, Donna Langley said, “For us, the job of marketing this particular movie is to gain awareness, but also it’s to prepare people for the experience so they can make a choice whether to go see the film or not. I think the movie is for anybody who feels like they want some insight to that day.”

Maybe we should be thinking about our own public relations

Tara Smith at Marqui brings up how important it is to make sure our own actions are reflecting the true image we want our personal publics to know.

So let’s all take a big step back and forget about what we’re doing for our clients and for schoolwork for a second… are we controlling our own messages so that people around us get the right image?

This becomes a very important question for college students and young PR professionals, especially with social media like blogging, facebook and myspace. With new technology, people are communicating more than ever before and in totally different ways, which can be oh-so-easily taken out of context.

People can overhear a conversation you’re having on your cell phone while doing your grocery shopping. E-mail and instant messaging can be misunderstood without the intonation of the human voice. We have profiles on MySpace and Facebook which are supposed to reflect our personalities and our true character, but what if jokes get taken the wrong way and bad impressions are being made?

More now than ever before are first impressions being made so quickly, and so harshly.
